The City of White Plains is seeking a competent and experienced attorney to serve as Corporation Counsel, directing the City’s Law Department and serving as chief legal advisor to the Mayor, Common Council, Boards, Commissions, and City departments. This is a leadership role offering the opportunity to guide complex litigation and provide strategic legal counsel for a dynamic and forward-thinking city.
Position Overview
Under the general direction of the Mayor and Common Council, the Corporation Counsel oversees all legal matters of the City of White Plains. The position is responsible for managing the Law Department, directing litigation strategy, drafting and reviewing legislation, negotiating contracts, and advising City leadership on a variety of legal, regulatory, and policy issues affecting municipal operations.
Education and Experience
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school;
Admission to the New York State Bar; and
Minimum of ten (10) years of legal practice experience, including municipal law.
Highly Desired
Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state and municipal laws, particularly litigation, municipal and
contract laws in the State of New York
Strong legislative drafting and negotiation skills
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound legal judgment
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
Highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism
Experience managing legal staff and complex legal operations
