PHILADANCO! (The Philadelphia Dance Company) seeks an experienced and dynamic full-time Managing Director with strong executive leadership and administrative skills, a passion and appreciation for the arts, and demonstrated success in fundraising and fiscal management.
PHILADANCO! was founded in 1970 by Joan Myers Brown out of a need to provide opportunities for dancers of color who had limited professional performance outlets. PHILADANCO! has since grown into an award-winning, fully professional dance company that is recognized across the nation and around the world for its artistic integrity, superbly trained dancers, and captivating performances. Established on principles of providing opportunity, inclusion, and hope, PHILADANCO! bridges cultural divides, supports artists from all backgrounds, and consistently performs before sold-out audiences of people from diverse ethnicities and communities.
Working with Founder/Artistic Advisor Joan Myers Brown and Artistic Director Kim Y. Bears-Bailey, the Managing Director will be a key member of the leadership team and will be responsible for energizing and collaborating with dancers, board, and staff in creating and maintaining a vision and strategy for the organization’s long-term growth, sustainability, and increased organizational capacity.
Governance and Leadership
Serve as principal liaison to the Board of Directors, including preparing for and managing meetings/retreats, recruiting and on-boarding new members, and conducting other Board support activities.
Provide advice and guidance to Board and staff regarding PHILADANCO!’s policies and strategic plan, implement strategies, and monitor progress against the organization’s goals.
Business
Oversee and monitor all financial and accounting activities with Financial Director/Board Treasurer and financial management staff including bank accounts, grant budgets and reports, and audits. Oversee board meeting financial documents as well as yearly reports.
Manage organizational marketing and communications operations – in conjunction with outside consultants and staff – including press, PR, website, social media, e-communications, archives.
In conjunction with Artistic Director, oversee self-produced presentations and performances at external and in-house venues.
Oversee and execute foundation, corporate, government and individual fundraising activities with development staff, senior leadership, and Board to ensure fund development goals are met and reporting requirements are accurate and delivered in a timely manner.
Oversee building’s physical condition, including any renovations and/or upgrades and be prepared to help with whatever is necessary.
Employee Management
Collaborate on and supervise hiring and evaluation of staff and independent contractors
Conduct regular staff and management meetings to ensure priorities are clear, coordination is effective, and communication remains open
With other members of the leadership team, create a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates high performance in staff, production team, and dancers.
Public Facing
Represent PHILADANCO! to the media, donors, external partners, community members, and the public at large in collaboration with its Board and Touring Agent.
With other members of senior leadership, cultivate relationships with business, philanthropic, educational, government, and community leaders to further PHILADANCO!’s position and connections among its many constituents, locally and nationally.

An ideal candidate will have an interest in and appreciation of dance or the Arts with a track record of fundraising success. Candidate must demonstrate leadership experience with and knowledge of the arts, arts education, and/or a non-profit cultural arts setting, including some understanding of non-profit laws and organizational requirements. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is preferred and at least 5 years’ experience.
Key skills must include leadership qualities with fiscal and business management success, attention to detail, strong writing and computer skills, good telephone manner, and ability to multi-task, pivot, and work well under pressure. Candidate must demonstrate effective communication skills with people from diverse backgrounds as well as the ability to present in small and large groups with a variety of stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to positively and effectively problem solve, foster community, and proactively address issues to prevent escalation also is important in this role. Most importantly, the candidate must become passionate about PHILADANCO!’s mission and maintaining its tradition of excellence.
