Detailed Job Description GIS is looking for an enthusiastic engineer with a strong background in new product design and development, hands-on experience with computer aided design, and a passion for sustainability. In our environment, researchers work with and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and are engaged in collaborative research with leading companies that produce a wide variety of products and technologies.
This position will primarily support a 2-year research project developing a design for remanufacturing tool for industry. As a Mechanical Engineer at GIS you may also lend your expertise to other projects; this support may include direct interaction with clean technology startup companies to review designs and assist with product development efforts, design of cost-effective and reliable products and/or processes, application of computer aided design tools, development and manufacture of test equipment and execution of test programs for product/component reliability and performance. You should be equally comfortable with a hands on development role (prototype development and testing) and with model-based engineering tools, such as SolidWorks, Autodesk tools, or CREO.
This position will report to the GIS Sustainable Design Technical Program Manager.
Participate as a key technical resource on the mechanical design and reman team for GIS' design for remanufacturing software plug-in for CAD development project:
Participate in data collection and aggregation, including leading virtual workshops with remanufacturers to collect part disposition decision criteria and core recovery information, conduct secondary research, develop EOL disposition criteria, data sets, and rubrics
Contribute to LCA models, including building process data stores
Collect data and develop a data store of design rules, through discussions with industry and company site visits
Develop a reman impact calculation methodology (models, ranking process, etc.) through secondary research of circular process methodologies, and primary data collect via expert panels and workshops.
Oversee the development of CAD models
Support rule design training and business rule development, develop use cases, contribute to user interface development
Contribute to project progress reporting, beta testing and project output demonstrations
Conduct and support research projects for other GIS programs:
Contribute to hands-on development of engineering technologies, including: prototype development, additive manufacturing equipment, mechanical test equipment and product test systems
Provide detail oriented contributions to the design, data collection and analysis of commercial client prototypes, and associated research experiments
Interface with industry clients to understand product development challenges and develop project proposals (scope of work and budget)
Manage design and development related projects for industry
Create technical reports and publications that document research developments
Perform literature searches on a variety of research project specific topics, e.g. material properties, susceptibility to wear or corrosion

Minimum Qualifications Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
Minimum of 10+ years of work-experience (within industry or equivalent) in a mechanical design and development environment.
Hands-on industrial experience in product manufacturing or design environment including strong understanding of product development process, and good understanding of manufacturing processes and impacts of manufacturing on design
Demonstrated skills with computer aided design and engineering tools (CAD/CAE)
Hands-on experience with prototype development and testing
Strong organization and motivation skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills, for both technical and non-technical audiences
