Tompkins Financial Corporation. (NYSE American: TMP) is seeking an experienced corporate/regulatory attorney to join our legal team. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in general corporate law, ideally including exposure to securities filings and/or financial services regulation. As a senior member of Tompkins’ legal team, this role reports directly to Tompkins’ General Counsel.
Flexible Location: Tompkins’ General Counsel is based at our Company Headquarters in Ithaca, New York, and our Corporate Counsel is based in our Rochester, New York office. Tompkins also maintains an administrative office in Syracuse, New York. This position can be based out of any of these offices, and will have a flexible, hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities:
In collaboration with external counsel and internal members of the Tompkins legal team, provide general legal guidance to the organization.
Manage certain external counsel engagements, when outside expertise is required for a particular matter.
Participate in special projects in support of Tompkins’ strategic objectives, and provide backup legal support other legal team members, as needed.
Assist in the implementation of strategies to achieve goals assigned to the department as established in the Company’s Strategic Plan
Partner with Compliance professionals to assist in the design and implementation of Compliance Management Program, including Compliance Risk Assessments and an underlying legal inventory of applicable laws and regulations.

Qualifications:
J.D. required, qualified to practice law in a United States jurisdiction.
4 – 7 years of experience practicing either in-house or at a regional/national law firm, with a focus on corporate/transactional work or bank regulatory work.
General familiarity with banking products and services, and commitment to developing skills necessary to provide legal guidance on the design and modification of our financial products, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies, develop strategies to ensure and document legal compliance and proper disclosures, and help improve “second line” review processes.
Confident, experienced attorney with sound judgment who can work independently with minimal oversight to provide practical legal advice, solve problems, exercise good business judgment, and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Willingness to take ownership of projects and tasks and see them through to completion, including other duties as assigned.
