About the Role:

Thorn builds technology to dramatically improve the world’s response to online child sexual abuse - with the ultimate goal of eliminating CSAM from the open web and creating a world where every child can simply be a kid.

The General Counsel is responsible for ensuring that Thorn’s legal compliance, risk management, and corporate and Board governance are assets of the business that help drive our mission forward while actively managing risks calibrated to the organization’s tolerance. In addition, the General Counsel works as a business partner to our teams to ensure legal input helps drive our work forward.

What You’ll Do:

  • Guide Executive Team and staff (as necessary) on legal matters relating to general business operations
  • Ensure legal and ethical compliance with local, state, and federal laws across international jurisdictions in which Thorn operates.
  • Draft, review, and assist in maintaining legal documents, including contracts, agreements, policies and procedures, and other documents.
  • Manage and triage outside counsel work.
  • Manage internal and external legal resourcing and budgeting.
  • Support court proceedings as needed where Thorn products were used.
  • Develop, implement, and enhance policies and procedures to support compliance for government contracts, data security, and GDPR.
  • Develop and implement special projects as requested by the CEO.
  • Drive enterprise risk management across Thorn.
  • Maintain the highest level of professional and ethical standards and act in compliance with the letter and spirit of all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Drive corporate governance and provide support to the Board.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Passion to serve Thorn’s mission.
  • The ability and desire to work remotely with a self-starting drive and collaborative nature. 
  • Process-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • 10-15 years experience as a General Counsel or senior leader of an in-house legal department managing an internal legal team and/or outside counsel.
  • Expertise in general corporate and/or commercial law with substantive knowledge of issues relating to software licensing, SaaS contracts, technology partnerships, intellectual property, employment, data privacy, and litigation, 
  • Must have a sleeves-rolled, hands-on approach towards day-to-day matters and the ability to think tactically and strategically on achieving short/long-term objectives.
  • Experience supporting a Board of Directors.
  • Experience or knowledge of 501(c) organizations a plus.
