Job Type: Staff Job Description: The Director of Legal Affairs and Risk Management represents the University in all of its legal matters and provides services across the legal spectrum. This includes a wide range of activities, including employment, contractual, student, research, intellectual property, compliance, and litigation matters. Reporting to the CFO/COO, the Director of Legal Affairs and Risk Management will also oversee the University's risk management activities. The position will establish and maintain systems and policies to protect University interests and assets, and as well as to prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct in the University's operations.
Primary Tasks & Duties
Provide legal and regulatory advice or consultation on various University matters, including review and recommendation on University policies, procedures, guidelines and other documents.
Provide contract administration oversight for the University, including drafting, reviewing, and/or approving contracts and other legal documents as directed by University management.
Develop and maintain the University policy library.
Provide guidance and assistance to the Provost Office for faculty and student related regulatory and compliance matters, as required.
Provide guidance and assistance to the Human Resources department regarding employment related matters, including employment agreements, accommodation requests, and compliance matters, as required.
Oversee the legal aspects of real estate transactions, construction contracts, and other corporate transactions related to business operations.
Facilitate execution of debt issuance and ongoing compliance with debt agreements.
Oversee risk management and compliance initiatives for the University by working with key stakeholders. Provide training and programs on legal issues to reduce litigation risks and liability
Manage the use of outside legal counsel.
Maintain awareness of current laws, statutes, regulations that impact the operations of the University.
Juris Doctorate required
Licensed to practice law in Missouri or other state bar preferred, not required
Higher Education experience preferred, not required.
Experience in real estate, construction and corporate law preferred, not required.
Knowledge of employment law and oversight of employment related legal matters preferred, not required.
Superior critical thinking skills to quickly comprehend new and complex concepts and translate them into easily understandable format for internal and external audiences.
Negotiating and influence skills.
Highly motivated and persistent to complete projects by deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact and communicate effectively with all constituents of the University and outside parties.
At least 5-8 years of legal experience in delivering legal services within a complex organizational structure or professional services firm preferred, not required
