Chief Compliance Officer and Legal Counsel serves as part of the senior leadership team of St. Thomas University, reporting to the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer. The Chief Compliance Officer and Legal Counsel provides legal advice and consultation to the University President, the Administration and faculty and represents the University before University hearing bodies as well as administrative and judicial bodies of the United States, the State of Florida, and Miami-Dade County. The Chief Compliance Officer and Legal Counsel reviews and recommends institutional policies and procedures, reviews or prepares contracts and other legal documents, and provides legal opinions to University committees and the University President. The Chief Compliance Officer and Legal Counsel oversees and coordinates the University’s commitment to remain compliant with all applicable legal and regulatory obligations. The Chief Compliance Officer and Legal Counsel is the major administrator with responsibility for oversight of Legal Affairs and Compliance.
Education: A Juris Doctorate degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school is required.
Experience: At least five years of legal experience in delivering legal services to or within a complex organizational structure is preferred. Employment law experience and litigation experience is preferred. Excellent professional references are required.
License: Membership in the State of Florida Bar or eligibility for membership in the Florida Bar within a reasonable period is required.
Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills are required in order to communicate legal advice/opinions and provide consultation to people from all constituencies of the University. The ability to provide effective legal representation within time constraints is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
