Supports the university’s fundamental commitment to the highest standards of ethics, integrity and conduct while leading tax and reporting compliance efforts, working closely with university financial staff and the Office of Legal Affairs. Oversees a staff of two, prepares tax filings and develops, applies and interprets university tax policies and procedures to ensure tax compliance with federal, state, local and foreign rules, regulations and requirements. Ensures the implementation and management of appropriate safeguards for tax compliance, as well as, compliance with tax reporting requirements. Communicates with taxing authorities on behalf of the university, as necessary.
Conducts tax compliance reviews ensuring compliance with local, state, federal and international tax laws, regulations, and court rulings; ensures proper preparation and timely submission of university tax returns and proper handling of taxable compensation; reviews unrelated business activities for taxability, including university contracts and cost allocation methods; directs and coordinates all aspects of tax audits and related communication, encompassing contacts between governmental taxing authorities and entities of the university; provides guidance and oversees the performance of processing tax deposits and filing related tax returns; provides guidance to ensure proper record-keeping.
Provides tax planning consultation with management, directors and department heads; provides advice with respect to employment classification and benefit taxation; develops and recommends changes to university polices and procedures to strengthen compliance with applicable tax laws; oversees the university-wide effort to identify taxable transactions; provides guidance to international faculty/students; develops and distributes tax guides, training workshops and presentations; performs technical tax research and analysis of tax laws, regulations, and cases; acts as liaison between university and various higher education tax groups; exercises appropriate judgment in providing advice, answering questions and releasing confidential information.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or other job-related discipline. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of the tax function. Strong technical tax knowledge, research skills, and proven ability to apply and communicate that knowledge. Knowledge of not-for-profit, corporate, partnership, governmental, and other entity types regarding tax structures, issues, and return preparation. Knowledge of unrelated business income tax and private use rules. Experience in tax return preparation, including not-for-profit organization returns. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to deal credibly and effectively with senior institutional leadership. Effective written, oral, and electronic communication skills. Strong computer skills including a high competency with Microsoft Excel and automated financial systems. Advanced analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills and the ability to effectively summarize and present information; Experience with ERP systems such as Peoplesoft.
