Reporting to the CEO, this position serves as the principal contact in all legal matters for the Airport Authority. The General Counsel is responsible for managing a wide variety of legal duties pertaining to leases, contracts and agreements for the Authority; representing the Authority’s interest in litigation including managing contracts for various outside legal counsel and rendering all legal opinions. The General Counsel will manage all legal affairs, including airline agreements, concession/commercial development agreements, land acquisition and ground leases, construction and consultant agreements and the lease of airport facilities. The General Counsel will provide legal opinions and advice to the CEO and Board Members on a wide variety of legal matters related to all aspects of the Airport Authority from its governance to the management and operation of Detroit Metro and Willow Run Airport.
Represent the Airport Authority as its General Counsel
Serves as a member of the Authority Senior Leadership Team supporting the strategic management of the Authority and the formulation and adoption of Authority goals, objectives, strategies, policies and procedures. Develop legal strategies to support those objectives.
Review, negotiate and approve contracts, grant agreements, concession agreements, vendor agreements, user agreements, leases, easements, permits and similar documents.
Coordination of legal issues.
Advise the Authority and its Board of Directors with respect to its legal obligations and responsibilities.
Draft and finalize preparation of contracts or other legal documents.
Represent the Authority in real estate transactions.
Manage legal services contracts for outside counsel. ? Manages the Authority legal team.
Interface with other Authority Departments to ensure legal compliance with state and federal law and regulations.
A Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school, and 8+ years as a practicing attorney, including extensive professional legal experience involving local government, experience in the Aviation Industry, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Must be admitted to the State Bar of Michigan within 6 months of hire.
Experience at an Airport or in the Aviation Industry is preferred.
Experience should reflect demonstrated knowledge and a thorough understanding of the laws as they relate to the sale and purchase of real property, rental and lease agreements, construction and contract administration, procurement and extensive understanding of Aviation, state and local law.
