The Deputy General Counsel serves under the general oversight of the General Counsel and acts in the absence of the General Counsel with the authority to fulfill the responsibilities of the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA). The Deputy General Counsel is responsible for planning, organizing, and daily operations of the Office of Legal Affairs. This position will also maintain an appropriate case load as a higher education generalist.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The overall mission of the Office of Legal Affairs is to provide high quality legal advice, guidance, and representation to advance and protect the University's mission and vision by providing professional, timely and knowledgeable legal advice and representation on the wide range of complex and highly-specialized legal issues affecting institutions of higher education. Through outreach and training activities and regular interaction with University administrators, faculty and staff, OLA strives to increase awareness of legal issues on campus in an effort to prevent problems and help clients sharpen their own objectives and strategies

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and a member in good standing, of the NC State Bar (or ability to be admitted within one year of hire) with at least ten (10) years of experience in handling a variety of legal issues and providing legal advice to a diverse client base. Experience must be related to areas of responsibilities and include progressively responsible administrative/management experience.
Fifteen (15) or more years of progressive legal experience. Five (5) or more years experience in higher education or administrative law. Management experience in a legal office is highly desirable. Preferred experience would include serving as in house counsel with a higher education institution, major research or other nonprofit organization. Preferred qualifications also include extensive speaking and writing experience as well as exceptional executive, analytical and communication abilities.
