Capital One’s Legal Department is seeking an experienced litigation attorney to join our Retail Bank Litigation Team in Richmond, Virginia. The primary responsibilities of this position include actively overseeing, providing strategy for, and delivering effective resolution of litigation and governmental inquiries related to the Retail Bank, as well as some litigation and governmental inquiries related to Auto Finance. In addition, this attorney is expected to advise clients on proactive approaches to mitigating legal risk gleaned from these matters. As a result, this position will involve interaction with internal business and legal associates, outside counsel, and customers and their counsel.
This attorney will be based in Capital One’s West Creek facility in Richmond and report to the Director, Assistant General Counsel - Retail Bank Litigation. The position will require occasional travel throughout the United States for litigation-related events.
Successful candidates will have a thorough understanding of and experience with litigation in federal and state courts, as well as general intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn new areas of law. This role also requires an attorney possessing strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and prioritization skills; outstanding judgment; excellent verbal and written communication; and the ability to interact with and influence associates across departments and job levels. Candidates must have the ability to handle ambiguity, as well as work effectively in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment, with minimal supervision, while managing large volumes of work, deadlines, and complex legal issues.
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Reviewing and analyzing incoming litigation and governmental inquiry matters;
Overseeing outside counsel in defending Capital One’s Retail Bank and Auto Finance lines of business throughout the United States;
Collaborating with an internal team of legal professionals, a network of outside counsel, and business clients to deliver effective solutions to litigation and complaints;
Timely reporting and escalation of existing and emerging litigation and risks for the Retail Bank and Auto Finance; and
Partnering with business clients to proactively identify litigation risks for the Retail Bank and Auto Finance and to develop and adopt practices and measures that mitigate these risks.

Juris Doctorate (JD) degree and a state bar member in good standing
At least 4 years of legal experience as an attorney litigating civil claims in state and federal courts OR At least 4 years of legal experience as corporate counsel managing civil litigation OR At least 4 years of combined experience
4+ years of litigation experience in a law firm or in-house legal department
4+ years of experience in litigating or managing consumer financial services litigation
Financial services industry knowledge
