Departmental Overview The position advertised here requires defining strategic goals at the Institute for Business Innovation (IBI) and the Clausen Center for International Business and Policy spanning five principal areas:
(1) Research amplification: Encourage, support, and disseminate research at Berkeley in the areas of entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Institute for Business Innovation and in the areas of international economics and finance at the Clausen Center for International Business and Policy. This responsibility involves designing a series of steps to identify and engage relevant faculty and students, determining resource needs and formulating plans to obtain and allocate those resources, and developing a work plan for IBI and Clausen staff to amplify the research of Haas faculty. Furthermore, the executive director must (a) align IBI's strategic goals with Berkeley-Haas objectives; (b) integrate IBI's work plan with other areas of strength on campus (e.g., engineering and the physical sciences) that link directly to innovation and entrepreneurship; and (c) work with faculty and staff in the Economics Department to make the Clausen Center the magnet of scholarly research in international economics on campus.
(2) Curriculum development: Enhance the academic experience of Berkeley-Haas students in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation. This entails designing a strategy to identify quickly the evolving demands for different skills in the corporate, government, and non-profit sectors and developing curricular and experiential offering to provide those skills to Haas students, so that they are competitive in the market. Recent examples of these activities include the newly adopted curriculum on Business Analytics at Haas, and the constant evolution of experiential offerings in innovation, entrepreneurship, and design thinking.
(3) Facilitating innovation: Boost the ability of Berkeley to support invention and innovation in the Bay Area, California, and the nation more generally. This entails developing programs and fora to engage with industry in ways that will foster relevant, innovative, and impactful research, including through collaborative research, debate, and, increasingly, data sharing to translate entrepreneurship and innovation research into practical knowledge that benefits California and the nation.
(4) Enhancing teaching in international economics and finance. Design and implement programs serving PhD and MBA students at Haas and Economics, and international fellows to support their doctoral research, business conferences, and life-long education.
(5) Contributing to the policy dialogue in international economics and finance. Organize and/or supervise large conferences and public lectures dealing with topical policy debates.
The Institute for Business Innovation (IBI) at the Haas School of Business promotes interdisciplinary research, instruction, and corporate outreach on matters of innovation, entrepreneurship, business analytics and intellectual property. The Institute houses and supports seven Centers and programs connecting faculty, students, and corporate partners interested in promoting, managing, and benefiting from innovation.

In addition to the role of Executive Director of IBI, the position also performs the role of Executive Director of the Clausen Center for International Business and Policy. This Center is a joint venture between the Haas School of Business and UC Berkeley's Economics Department. The Center's mission is to promote path-breaking scholarly research, enhance teaching in the area of international economics and finance, and contribute to the policy dialogue on these issues. The role of the Executive Director is to assist the Faculty Director in carrying out the Center's activities.
To note, the position allows foralthough it does not requirea direct contribution to the teaching of business students at Haas. (Candidates with the necessary qualifications and experience may teach in any of the six programs at Haas).
Manages the design and development of major research or academic program components, oversees execution of programs once funded.
Identifies and develops continuance of funding from multiple external sources.
IBI's Executive Director has the full responsibility of supporting the production and dissemination of ladder faculty research by funding and allocating research grants, supervising academic conferences and seminars, administering fellowships for postdocs and graduate students, and participating in editorial meetings of the academic journal ICC.
The Executive Director also works with Center and program directors within IBI to fund, develop, execute and coordinate activities directly under the Centers' and programs' missions, such as designing new curricula in entrepreneurship, innovation and design, supporting startups with matching, ideation, acceleration and funding, and organizing round-tables with business executives.
The Executive Director also facilitates forming relationships with corporations willing to share large data-sets, so that Haas researchers may access the data.
For the Clausen Center, the Executive Director helps identify research projects to fund, and oversees the financial and dissemination aspects of the funded research.
For IBI and the Clausen Center, the Executive Director also plays a significant role in organizing and supervising the dissemination of research through conferences and public lectures.
Develops and executes strategic plan for financing program activities and ensuring ongoing sustainability of Centers and programs at IBI and the Clausen Center.
Works with Center and program directors to align incentives and budgets.
Oversees all financial aspects of their activities, including evolving their financial models to respond to constantly changing sources and conditions of external funding.
For the Clausen Center, the Executive Director also cultivates relations with the Advisory Board and works with faculty seeking external funding.
Ensures through subordinates varied and competing requirements associated with managing an innovative program in a university and/or government environment.
IBI's Executive Director manages staff, and hires consultants and students for specific projects and tasks.
The Executive Director ensures that IBI staff that work with all Centers and programs are well-informed, equipped, trained and supported.
For the Clausen Center, the Executive Director coordinates with the Economics department to carry out programs for visitors, conferences, and seminars.
Plans, directs and controls program budget(s) and manages financial, HR, technical and other supporting resources.
The Executive Director works with Haas senior staff to coordinate on all policies and procedures affecting budgets and people at IBI.
Ensures the assessment and success of the program(s) effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and strategic goals accordingly.
In addition to data collection and planning and review sessions concerning the Centers and program activities, IBI's Executive Director monitors the effectiveness of activities by attending conferences, seminars, round-tables, student competitions, and courses organized by IBI's Centers and programs.
Develops and maintains liaisons with external constituencies, and ensures representation of the program to governing boards, outside agencies, and the public.
The Executive Director coordinates fund raising opportunities with Haas' Development office, and helps faculty apply for external grant funding.
Develops ideas and options for faculty review and decision, and develops and implements instruction and research programs that reflect faculty interests.
In addition to coordinating with the Faculty Director of IBI, the Executive Director maintains a regular dialogue with ladder faculty working on innovation, and attends the weekly Dean Faculty Seminar to keep abreast of faculty research interests.
Leadership experience in academic and/or government agencies.
Expert oral and written communication skills to market programs and reach external constituencies effectively.
Demonstrated expertise in building collaborations between academia, industry and/or governmental agencies.
Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
